Earlier this month Activision and Infinity Ward had their multiplayer world premiere of the upcoming Call of Duty Modern Warfare and it did not disappoint.
35 of the biggest Streamers and E-sports athletes were invited to this private event. All of them were allowed to live stream the game on their Twitch channels. Among those invited were Shroud, former Counter Strike Global Offensive Champion. and Dr. DisRespect, 2017 E-sports Industry Awards Streamer of the year. Both names are huge in the Twitch and YouTube gaming communities. Shroud has 6.8 million followers on Twitch and over 5 Million subscribers on YouTube. Dr. DisRespect has over 3.6 Million followers on Twitch and over a million subscribers on YouTube. During the World Premiere, nearly half a million people tuned into the live streams.
With this upcoming re-imagining of the Modern Warfare Franchise, Activision made one of the biggest announcements not only for gamers but the video game industry as a whole. The 2019 installment of Call of Duty Modern Warfare would be launching with full cross-play support! Allowing PC, PlayStation and Xbox players to play together. Very few games have been able to accomplish this feat, Fortnite is one of them. This move will undoubtedly help with the longevity and reach of the game.
Several game modes were showcased at the reveal. Among these, the classic team deathmatch was shown off in which 2 teams, 6 v 6, fight to reach a kill score. Expect this classic mode to be at the center for 2019 and 2020 Call of Duty tournaments.
A brand new game more, 2 v 2 gunfight, was shown as well. It’s a very fast-paced, no respawn and no health regeneration mode. Two 2 person teams spawn on different sides of a very small and symmetrical map, both teams have the same loadout that is randomized by the game. Knock both opposing players out and you win the round. The first team to win 6 rounds wins the match. This mode is very exciting and super fast-paced with some round lasting only 10 seconds. This mode will undoubtedly be a great fit for bracket-style tournaments. I can’t wait to see the e-sports tournament that will be based around this style of gameplay.
The alpha test of the 2v2 mode will be open to all PS4 users first this weekend form Aug 23-25. More open Beta tests will occur before release.
Infinity ward also showed off their new 20 v 20 games mode and map. This mode looked chaotic and fun, with huge firefights! They even had vehicles. Unfortunately, as the game in at an early build, the game server crashed. Although many of the attendees and viewers worldwide were not happy with the crash everyone seemed to enjoy the new mode. Only time will tell if this mode will be a hit and if it will be implemented in tournaments.
The upcoming Call of Duty is looking very promising. With the implementation of cross-play and exciting new game modes, this rendition of the Modern Warfare franchise is sure to make a splash in the esports community. We will be keeping an eye on this title which is expected to be released on October 25th, 2019.
